Many would consider UC to have a conservative campus. The fact that there was no official organization for conservatives came as a surprise to some, so a small group of students decided that they would form a chapter of the College Republicans on campus. After several months of work, the University of the Cumberlands College Republicans held its first meeting on January 23. During this meeting, the attendees approved the groups new constitution, as well as elected interim officers. Additionally, Brent Burchett, the chairman of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans, was at the meeting and presented the new organization with a check for $200.
The stated goals of the UC College Republicans include “promoting political dialogue among students, faculty, and all members of the community.” To help achieve that goal, on March 11, the organization hosted a debate on Iraq between the two political science department professors, Dr. Bruce Hicks and Dr. Chris Leskiw. The debate was well attended, with over 70 people in attendance. There are several events being planned for the future by the UC College Republicans, including a possible community service project, and possibly co-hosting an event with the College Democrats.
In any case, the group doesn’t plan on going away any time soon, so keep an eye out for us!
