About

The Patriot is the official student newspaper of University of the Cumberlands. We seek to provide hands-on journalism experience for the University’s students. Students are involved in writing, editing, photography, and layout design. The campus newspaper is produced by a student staff.

You do not have to be a Communication Arts major or a Journalism minor to be involved with the campus newspaper. All UC students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to take part in publication of The Patriot. The Patriot gives students of all majors and interests experience with print communication through a wide range of writing, from news and features to entertainment, religion and sports. Contributors can also write commentary and humorous or creative pieces. The print version of paper reaches approximately 2,000 people, both on campus and across the world.

The Patriot offers work study positions and journalism scholarships. The office of The Patriot is located on campus inside the Office of Student Activities in the lower level of the Boswell Campus Center. If you would like more information, please contact The Patriot at (606)539-4172 or send an email to thepatriot@ucumberlands.edu. It’s our hope that this website is filled with stories about changes in the university and the accomplishments of its students, alumni and faculty.

The site is designed to archive and display the work of students – both work done for classes and work completed as part of the student staff. The Patriot Online was established to promote UC’s efforts in teaching and exploring the areas of online journalism.

In addition to displaying the work of students, the operation of the site itself gives students a chance to participate in an active news organization and to make decisions about content, display and personnel. The site can be updated instantly as news and other content decisions require.

Why a website? Why go online?

The web is a different medium, different from print and broadcasting just as those two media are different from each other. The audience expectations for news web sites are different than those of print or broadcast audiences; the relationship of the audience to the medium is also different. Consequently, the journalism found on this web site may also be different in content and form from that found on other media. We hope you are informed and entertained by it.
